Description

LHY Audio LPS-80

Ultra-low noise linear power supply – 80 W

The LHY Audio LPS-80 it is a high-performance linear power supply designed to replace the conventional switched-mode power supplies used by numerous digital components. It provides a cleaner, more stable and quieter direct current, reducing electrical noise that can propagate to the rest of the audio system.

It is especially suitable for streamers, network players, Ethernet switches, routers, DACs, digital interfaces, external clocks, mini-PCs, Raspberry Pis and other DC-powered devices.

Clean power supply for the digital system

Conventional switched-mode power supplies are practical and economical, but can generate high-frequency electrical noise. The LPS-80 employs a completely linear architecture, based on an 80 VA Noratel/Talema toroidal transformer, Schottky rectification and an advanced shunt regulation stage.

This design allows for a power supply with lower residual noise, low impedance and a high response capacity to sudden changes in consumption.

In a properly adjusted audio system, the improvement can be perceived as:

  • Quieter background.
  • Greater cleanliness and definition.
  • Better instrument separation.
  • More stable and precise soundstage.
  • Softer and more natural treble.
  • Better articulated bass.
  • Lower harshness in digital reproduction.

High-performance regulation

Depending on the selected voltage, the LPS-80 uses several low-noise regulators working in parallel:

  • Five LT3041 regulators for the 5 to 12 V versions.
  • Four LT3086 regulators for the higher voltage versions.

This configuration reduces output impedance and improves current delivery capability, which is especially important in streamers, switches, and digital devices whose power consumption constantly fluctuates.

Selected components

The power supply incorporates low-drop Schottky rectifiers, four 4,700 µF Philips BC capacitors, a four-layer printed circuit board, a copper heatsink and a Schurter fuse.

The supplied DC power cable is made of oxygen-free copper and can be ordered with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm or 5.5 × 2.5 mm connector.

Compatibility

The output voltage is factory-set and cannot be modified from the outside. Before placing the order, the following must be checked:

  1. The exact voltage the appliance needs.
  2. Its maximum current consumption.
  3. The dimensions of the DC connector.
  4. The polarity of the connector.

The power supply can provide more amperage than the device needs, but the voltage and polarity must match exactly. Electricity has many virtues, but a sense of humour is not among them.
