Description
Sorane SA-1.2 tone arm
Unique design, unique sound, unique value for money, high-quality tonearm.
The sound of the Sorane SA-1.2 tonearm is quite unique; due to its fluted design and construction, the main component of the arm is machined from a single piece of aluminium and assembled with great precision and care. There is practically none of the resonance associated with S-shaped arms and much greater strength and lower «critical» resonances than virtually all straight arms.
The weakness of low-mass tone-arms is that they do not pair well with medium- and low-compliance cartridges. The Sorane SA-1.2 gives you precise radial bearing performance and very low resonance, while providing the necessary mass for medium- and low-compliance cartridges.
An important influence on the performance of the SA-1.2 (silver anodised) and the SA-1.2B (black anodised) is the use of very high-quality bearings. The bearings used for the horizontal movement are axial load thrust bearings (angular contact). These thrust bearings have no play and are held in contact by gravity; consider them as acting like a unipivot but with more than one point of contact. Due to their design with two conical seatings, they self-align in the presence of a load (gravity) and have extremely low friction.
Unlike the classic tonearms of the past (which suffered from resonances and lower-quality bearings), the SA-1.2 provides the ideal mass for classic cartridges such as the Denon DL103 or the Ortofon SPU (as well as mono cartridges like the DL102 or even vintage cartridges such as the GE VR and Fairchild) along with the majority of moving-coil cartridges.
The Sorane SA-1.2 tonearm has very low tracking error, the superior sonic signature of billet aluminium arm parts and the equivalent mass of most 12″ arms, offering a 12″ arm sound in a compact 10″ length arm. A protractor is supplied to ensure the manufacturer's optimum geometry, but it can be (simply) modified if necessary. It is ideal for low to medium compliance cartridges, especially good for controlling problematic cartridges when dealing with tracking error, such as older «classic» designs. .
How does the Sorane sound? It has excellent tone and timing, with a «liquid» midrange to rival the very best tonearms. The bass is firm and integrated with the whole, the treble is clean and precise.
Sorane SA-1.2 and SA-1.2B offer exceptional value for money and will work well with most cartridges, especially moving coil ones, getting the absolute most out of them.
